OK..."Wrong on so many levels" Is the most overused term in the english language. In most instances (this one being a great example) it's wrong on ONE level. And btw...it might be wrong, but all you fuckers laughed and you know it. I did.

There is a small amount of people it should piss off because they have regressed instead of progressed. In other words, stop whining and do something (positive) if you don't like where you are in life. Regardless of color - I'm sick of hearing people complain and whine about how poor they are and than spend over $100 on things they don't really need.

a lot of bigger issues regarding racism in our country, do we really want to chose this as one of our battles? I mean really, do you believe someone purposefully set this up? And if they did, consider them to be small minded and ignorant.
Should we boycott all cotton products because our ancestors were enslaved to harvest this crop so many years ago?
If we cry wolf at every perceived slight made towards our race, no one will take an honest threat seriously.

this is perfect, but i think the funniest part is how many people are talking about blacks picking cotton as if they actually believe the whole "Blacks were slaves" urban legend.
jeez, you people need to grow up and read more.

I hope you've received negative feedback from this comment:

Because for someone to say that means they never paid attention in history class...

It doesn't look like that display was meant to hold bags of cotton balls. The bags don't fit next to each other, and there are no price tags on the ends of the product hooks like EVERY other item in a Walgreens has.
Perhaps Walgreens had nothing to do with it?
Looks to me like someone set up a mean "joke" and took a photo of it.

A racial insult is a racial insult - the difference is that whites being called cracker know that if they pay no attention to it, then they can move on and spend their time dealing with issues that are actually important, versus creating a big scene and disrupting everything everytime they hear the N word - racism has a huge impact, but the major portion of that impact is in how it is perceived.
Why do so many racists use the N Word? Because they know exactly how their targets will react - they are extremely predictable. If you want to see this word vanish from our vocabulary, just learn to ignore it and stop having a full drawn out hissy fit everytime you encounter it.
Let me sum it up - they (racists) use the N Word because of the spectacular results it produces. Stop being a party to those results, and they will stop using it - that's it - doesn't get any simpler than this..

A racial group gets singled out for it's own special "awareness month" but is too emotionally delicate to cope with a sign put up in their honor placed next to a widely used retail product?
The institutionalized victims have won.

I imagine myself as that employee placing the 'black history month' sign above the cotton balls. What comes to mind for me is:
A. I think it's a callous, offensive, ironic mistake, being that blacks were slaves and forced to pick cotton,
B. it is such a glaring mistake it's actually funny, esp since topical racism died in the 80s, to be replaced by class and culture ISMs.
C. that my manager is completely oblivious to this glaring offense, being he/she is simply an agent of a faceless corporation whose mindset regarding the sign is to appeal to the black female consumers of the adjacent cosmetics.
D. I'm being paid minimum wage or slightly higher but not nearly enough to care OR to fight a stupid decision made by a thoughtless walgreens/corporation and
E. Corollary to that, I'm a level 1 lesser, minor grunt-worker 'associate', so what would walgreens care what I think anyway, *even if my suggestions enhance their bottom-line*? So the end result: the sign stays.
Black people who see this and are offended may not come back. walgreens would lose money, the opposite of their intent. People post this and others see this on the internet and think it's funny/sad. I write a long comment about it.

Prior to the abolition of slavery, a great many slaves were used to pick cotton on large plantations for their 'owners'. So, cotton balls on a black history month display is not really something most black people would probably like to celebrate about their history..

What does that even mean? What levels is this picture wrong on? Is it right on some levels?
Can I get a list of all the available levels, so when I see a picture, I can tell if it's wrong on "so many" levels or just a couple?
